Prompt 25. Sunday 7th October 2018 - The 25th prompt will be..  Practice for the budget/broke practitioner!

Starting out in any new practice can be truly daunting, where to start? What to buy? What books do I need? What tools? Supplies? Materials? Ok..  Overwhelming is an understatement..  If you read my blog post on ‘Supplies What to buy and Where’ you’ll have a general idea of what’s available or even expected.. the kind of tools and supplies for basics and such forth but what about those of us who are on a tight budget or worse completely broke?  As mentioned in my last blog you absolutely do not need to buy anything in order to practice Witchcraft, Paganism such as Wicca or any other Spiritual Practices.  So in this blog post I thought I’d bring you some of the best tools and ingredients from the budget / broke practitioner.

1. Books and free online resources:
So first of all let's address the book situation.  As always books are a go to source for information and opinions, I’ve said before how I absolutely love to read / hear different peoples opinions, takes and practices on same or similar subjects..  I digress.  As I was saying books are a great resource although perhaps not every library is going to be well stocked in witchy, paganism, occult, magick etc type books..  This then leads to a few other sources so 1. You can find extremely reasonable second hand booked on ebay and amazon.  But if you’re completely broke (or don’t exactly want those huge doorstops advertising your new interest to anyone who sees them) feel free to hit the internet sourcing free materials such as this blog, other blogs, facebook groups etc.  Even pinterest, youtube and Instagram can be a great insight into what others are doing.  – Granted seeing what others are doing can be intimidating (and cause mass splurging wanting to buy all the pretty things) but don’t worry once you break the fear of practicing you’ll be well on your way..   You may even wish to consider other sources such as audiobooks from places such as audible and itunes.  Did I mention all the amazing YouTubers?!

2. Buy in bulk (and/or trade):
While this may not lean itself towards those of us who are completely broke it is definitely great for the long term users; often you can get a great discount if supplies such as herbs are purchased in bulk lots like instead of a couple of grams buy a few kilograms this will not only last longer but be more product for your money - be aware that herbs and such go off over time and do have a use by date.  Which brings me to my next point which is to trade.  If you have excess rosemary why not trade with a friend who bought a bulk load of jasmine and another who bought a bulk load of lavender and another who bought a bulk load of..  You get the idea.

3. Trade / Swap:
As I just mentioned you can always trade goods with friends, fellow community members, coven members etc.  I'm sure there's facebook groups setup for this type of thing and of course trade can also be for money, other goods and services.  You may also swap other items such as tools or handmade goods in order to aid your practice and others - if you have a skill why not put it to use?

4. Back to nature:
In my previous blogs I mentioned how a lot of traditional tools and supplies would have been picked from nature or sourced from nature be it herbs, plants, weeds, bark, resin etc or even sticks, stones, bones, antlers, dirt, sand, water, feathers, etc..  A great many things can be sourced and made from nature.

Bones can be used to create tools such as bowls, knives, spoons, cups etc.  They can also be turned into bone casting runes or have other runes such as Elder Futhark Runes engraved into them.  They can be used in jewellery, home decor, wards and other hangings.  They can be used in practice for spell and rituals and many other workings.  Same goes for antler and other animal remains like feathers, teeth and skin (such as snake skin).  If you have pets you may also be able to obtain whiskers, claws, hair etc which has naturally come off the animal of course.  Other animal products may include wool.

Dirt / Sand / Water and other elements that can be found and gathered including beach sand, dirt from graveyards or crossroads or other sacred or even none sacred spaces, water from the sea, lake, ocean, river, rain etc.  Water can be blessed or have other properties such as moon water, storm water, sea water etc.  Water such as seawater or ocean water carries a lot of powerful properties (please don't drink it) but you can anoint yourself and other items, use it in ritual and other workings, as a representation of water and more.

I wrote a blog on the properties of seaglass and how it carries all the elements throughout it's journey from fire and earth used to make the glass originally right through to air, earth and sea as it's tumbled and smoothed.

Other beach finds could include rocks and pebbles that you paint or use as are, seaweed, moss, algae, shell, bird feathers, dried dead starfish, crab parts, found objects, driftwood etc.  Even sand itself as it's good for burning charcoal discs upon or burning candles upon etc.

Flowers / Leaves / Plants / Herbs Etc..  These are all items that can be sourced in the wild, grown at home, found in our gardens, woods, parks etc.  These can be used in spells, incense and a variety of other magickal uses.  They can even be used in offerings to deity, fae, ancestors etc.  Plant parts that haven't been chemically treated can also be used in tea, tinctures, baths, skin care etc.  (Please do your research.)  And as said you can always grow your own.

Sticks / branches will make for excellent tools as they can be carved into wands, stirring tools, used in makings of items like wards, wall hangings, markings, division lines, athame, etc..   They could be carved, used for burning, larger branches and smaller sticks can make a traditional besom (or broom).   Woven into baskets.  There's a lot that can be done with sticks.

Stones and Rocks can be found in parks, woods, beaches, mountains, cliffs and other areas.  You may get lucky and find some quartz or other crystals depending on where you live.  But other stones such as those with natural holes in them are often known as hagstones, fairystones, wishstones or adder stone these stones all have a naturally occurring hole right through them (this is not a man made hole).  Here's a post (not by me) which gives more information on hagstones: https://www.thoughtco.com/what-is-a-hagstone-2562519..  Stones and rocks can also be used to crush ingredients much like a primitive mortar and pestle.  Rocks can be painted and used as elemental markers, deity symbols, other symbols and well a lot of painted rock uses as well as decor and even jewellery items which could be charmed.

5. Hand me downs & second hand shops:
Items handed down through generations, family, friends, neighbours, fellow witches etc.  This can also include free goods from sites such as freecycle here in the UK or Craigslist in the US (please be careful when dealing with strangers especially entering a strangers house! always exercise extreme caution as not everything is always as it seems!) but great deals can be found..

Same goes for second hand shops, while the items are not free you may find some great deals as well..

Items to look out for are things like any tables, stands, shelves, bookcases etc anything that can be used as an altar table or storage even medicine cabinets, display cabinets, sideboards etc.  Then you can get tools be it tools for your craft or tools to craft tools with.  You can also get bowls and crockery, fabrics, art supplies and much more.  Some may even have books, figures, jars, apothecary items, spice jars/racks, and other items.  Broken jewellery can be fixed and worn or used to adorn other items.  Jewellery boxes and other boxes are great to store everything from tarot decks to specialist items or even make yourself a manifestation box.

The beauty of secondhand despite finding some absolute unique pieces and bargains be it cheap or free is that even if you dislike the colour it can be painted or altered in some way to personalise the item to be your own unique item.  Even mundane items can become extremely witchy with a lick of paint and some clever spoken words.  You can even turn old clothing and fabric into altar cloths, throws, spell/mojo/storage bags, cloaks, decor, cushion covers and more..

Glass wear can be used as a chalice, Pans and other heatproof containers as cauldrons, Bowls etc, Mortar and Pestle, Storage, Figurines, Ornaments, Statues, Craft supplies (both art and magickal) and much more.

6. Recycled jars & containers:
I happen to know for a fact just how easy these things are to come by.  First of all any lovers of meat paste, coffee, jam, marmalade, sauces etc is going to become your best friend also anyone who has a baby / younge toddler etc..  People who buy other jar goods like pickled items, hotdogs, spreads..  And right there you've got yourself a collection of varying types and sizes.  Even herbs come in reusable glass containers.  All of these jars can be left alone, painted, add labels, ribbons, decorate in many ways or not and can hold various items from herbs and resins to stones, trinkets, jewellery, seaglass, water, found objects, spell jars, sand and more...

Failing obtaining these jars for free people tend to sell such items at silly prices on Ebay and Etsy and even local selling groups as often people buy them for wedding purposes (centerpieces / table decor etc).  Sometimes these things are donated to charity shops.  But some places like Wilkos, Poundland/DollarTree/DollarStore, Ikea and a few others carry jars sometimes quite inexpensively.

But why stop at glass jars?  Any container that can be washed is reusable..  So ice cream tubs, baby formula cans, gravy containers, sweet tins, pringles tubs are but a few that sprint to mind that can be decorated with paint, scrapbook paper or even decoupage with newspaper or decorative napkins or left as is.

You may even get lucky with glass bottles, reusable perfume bottles, ashtrays, sweet jars/containers, apothecary jars and bottles, baskets, bowls, trinket and jewellery boxes and other storage items too..

7. Candles:
Candles are another item that can be sourced quite cheaply or they can be expensive..  but making your own candles can be very cost effective either buying wax and wicks to make your own or melting down candles.  - Sometimes pre-used candles can come with a stigma of you don't know what energies or uses those candles had.  So like most other pre-used / pre-loved / pre-owned items you way with to Cleanse, Charge and Consecrate them.  Candles can also be anointed, have items added too such as oils, herbs and stones.  They can be reformed by being poured into heatproof silicone moulds.

8. Salt:
Salts has a lot of protective properties; in fact one of my upcoming blogs is going to be dedicated to different salts and some ideas of what you can use salt for in your practice.  But sea salt, rock salt, himalayan pink rock salt, witches black salt, epsom salt etc etc are just some kinds of salts that can be used with great power within your craft such as for protection, cleanse, purification and more.  Salt isn't overly expensive either and can be stored in some of them upcycled jars or bottles..  Or kept in their original packaging just keep in mind that salt is very absorbent of damp / moisture and negative energies..

9. Junk Drawers:
You will be amazed what you find hiding in the backs of your drawers, sewing boxes, bottoms of your jewellery boxes, or in that ever growing junk drawer, that odds and ends screw jar or button jar etc..  Found items can be used to make your own rune set.  Items for altering other items or adhoring handmade items such as wands, witchy boxes, spell jars etc..  A deck of playing cards which you could be used as is or custom modify into a tarot deck.  Pins/Needles can be used in banishing magick or in hoodoo workings among others.  String and ribbon can be used in magickal practices ie knot spells or binding spells.  Keys are magickal all on their own same with mirrors.  Jewellery; broken jewellery, odd earrings, bits of old necklaces, odd pendants without chains, or even just jewellery than can be repurposed or charmed.  Other items might include old coins or buttons..  Misc junk, scrap, metal, paper etc etc.  Paper can be wrote upon and burnt - I personally use cigarette papers for this.  Heck my junk drawer also contains lighters since I use to smoke some 5+ years ago..  You will be amazed at the treasure trove you have going on..  Marbles or mirrors for scrying etc.  You might even find some birthday candles (or wish candles as I like to call them), matches, other candles too.  Spoons or knives, even letter openers might make for some awesome stirring, measuring, cutting tools etc or even as an athame (my athame is a letter opener and my working knife is a penknife).

10. Journal / Diary / Notebooks / Technology:
Sourcing these may not be free but all pound shops and dollar stores stock paper and writing materials like pens, pencils and most I assume carry notebooks and diaries to..  Use purchased paper, another is to buy in bulk and then use as is (with a pen you found in your junk drawer perhaps) or alter to customise it with pens, stamps, paints, other found objects, decoupage and pretty papers, sometimes you can find free craft resources or samples including patterned paper, tissue paper, paper napkins..  You could also DIY a bookmark or charm page minder.  Other ideas may be to use your computer, tablet or phone - I know many people who have digital book of shadows (remember to back it up, or even print out pages as you see fit).

11. DIY Jewellery vs Cheap jewellery:
As a jewellery maker I probably shouldn't give away some tips of my trade but I'm here to help you out..  First of all making jewellery isn't actually as easy as it look, bending and forming wire isn't that simple and knotting elastic or fine threads aren't always that simple either.  But financially (if you take out the cost of your time to make) you can make a whole bunch of personal jewellery pieces from amulets to talismans and charmed items and more..  You could purchase inexpensive beads in the stones you love for metaphysical properties although as I have mentioned before you may also need to know the properties of some stones as some contain ill health properties that could make you sick while others may dissolve in water or discolour in direct sunlight here are a few I have sourced and found out about HERE.  Alternatively Charity Shops, Ebay, Second Hand Stores etc all source Semi Precious Stones and Jewellery Pieces from time to time some of which would be ideal.  I know a few years back I sourced a silver metal choker which had 9 pieces of Amethyst on it for 99p, at a carboot I purchased an Amethyst bracelet for 50p and a carnelian necklace that was missing one stone but I was able to repurpose.  Other options may include sites like aliexpress as I have a number of bat themed, raven/crow, planchet, amulet, locket, vial, cameo etc etc necklaces all for very cheaply from aliexpress.

12. DIY:
If you haven't guessed by now then DIY can be your best friend even though sometimes craft supplies aren't cheap but if you use upcycled, recycled, cheap or free items to make what you can yourself.  As mentioned you can make jewellery but you can also make jewellery from cheap or free supplies such as antler, wood, shell, stones and drilling a hole or wire/cord wrapping etc.  Other DIY may include things like making your own candles or altering candles to include herbs, oils, stones, scents, other candles or to remould them to shapes using various heatproof moulds such as silicone food moulds.  Other DIY items might include corn dolls (or voodoo dolls) made from corn, grass or similar woven items such as the as mentioned baskets for gathering and storage.  Woold can be used to knit or crochet tarot bags, herb bags or other textiles.  Paint cheap boxes or jewellery boxes to make them suit your need or even create a manifestation box which you can fill with free/cheap items.  DIY items can be traded, swapped or sold which would be a great source of income to be able to afford those more pricier items you have your heart set on; but as mentioned you don't need them.

13. Free Practice:
Practice comes in various forms and types some free things you could do to connect to nature/spirituality/the craft etc includes grounding yourself, meditation, prayer, self cleansing (with water, sunlight, moonlight), practicing mindfulness, gratitude, even charity work and doing good for others.  Other free workings may include creating your own Sigils, Runes or Ciphers. You could also look up some spoken spells or spells that require no tools or physical items..  Or that require only you or metaphysical abilities.  Some spells and working are created through sexual climax (this includes solo or consenting partner/partners).  Some workings can be achieved through imagination or inner self exploration.  Being humble, modest, living a green life, reducing your footprint, being vegetarian/vegan etc..  Workings can be solely done through emotional connections.  Dream workings.  Scrying in reflective surfaces.  Dowsing with any string/chain like item and weight.  Enchanting and charming items.  Using the clair senses or other abilities.

Activity..

  • Practice a more frugal lifestyle for a few weeks or months living on less and perhaps if possible donating that extra to a worthy charity or cause OR support independent businesses who would benefit greatly from your purchase(s).
  • Have a clearout and either sell, trade or donate items you don't really need or use to either new practitioners, charities, facebook groups etc.
  •

BoS Prompt 24: Real Dangers of Stones, Herbs and Essential Oils!

FYI: There is now a dedicated facebook page for you to follow so as to support these blog posts @ https://www.facebook.com/BookOfShadowsPrompts/

Prompt 24. Sunday 30th September 2018 - The 24th prompt will be..  Real Dangers of Stones, Herbs and Essential Oils!

I have previously done a number of blogs on Stones, Herbs, Oils etc..  Infact BoS Prompt Number 9 I believe was on this subjects but only on the positive uses and information found HERE.  Today I thought I'd bring you a blog which contains some very real health risks of these items and also dangers..

As Rumpelstiltskin says “All Magic Comes With A Price, Dearie” but what if some of those prices can be avoided?

In magick, much like all things, some items are not good for us, our pets / familiars / animals, our families and friends (people) and in all honesty even giving these things to your enemies could potentially land you in prison with a manslaughter charge.  Oh dear..  So let’s look at some of those potential hazards.  First I’m not going to mention the absolute obvious stuff, I’m sure you have a reasonable knowledge of right vs wrong and what could be potentially dangerous.  But I’m here to fill in just some of the lesser known hazards and side effects of use and actions..

That said please don’t let this blog detour you from practicing as practicing is very important!!  Just be mindful and do your research :) – As said the internet is a wealthy resource of information for all walks of life and interests.

Let us begin.

Crystals & (Semi) Precious Stones etc..

Crystals, Semi-Precious and Precious Stones are sourced in a manner of different ways while most are commonly, as assumed, mined from the ground.  Some however are mined from wetter climates, some drier, and some are mined not from the ground but from fallen meteorites and space debris!!  Some however aren’t mined at all like the Cubic Zirconia oh yes the ever so popular fake Diamond which embraces most engaged ladies hands is actually a man made stone.  Applying research can save you the upset of fakes or damaging your crystals and stones eg:
Cubic Zirconia (CZ) is created from the cubic crystalline or crystalized form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2).  It is a synthetic hard material that to the naked eye being optically flawless, low cost, durable and usually colourless makes for a much cheaper Diamond dupe or replica.  Cubic Zirconia was first discovered in 1892.  It has a high melting point of 2750 °C or 4976 °F.
However there are a few tell tail signs that the stone is a CZ and not a real Diamond the first being that if you look closely 10+ magnify zoom you will be able to tell a difference in Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight.
Some other tell tail differences include:
- Use a black light and if it doesn't glow under UV light then you probably have CZ and not a real Diamond.
- CZ retains heat and can be tested by going to a cold location, breath upon the stone, the hot air will fog any CZ while a real diamond will remain unchanged.
- Another heat test (though more permanent) using tweezers hold the stone over a light flame for around 40-50 seconds and then immediately drop into ice water a real diamond will not react however a CZ will shatter or break under the extreme temperature changes.
- You can see right through CZ and read print this is often known as the newspaper test.
- Place the loose stone in a glass of water a diamond due to its density will sink where as a CZ will usually float.
So from this information we can deduct that we don’t want to be subjecting our Cubic Zirconia stones to extreme changes of temperature, if we’re trying to fool people we’re carrying around a big Diamond and not a CZ we may wish to avoid black lights, anything that could create fog or even water with loose stones.  Just for some examples.

However that’s just one type of stone which is a synthetic man made stone as mentioned.  Some other man made stones or dyed stones may include Agates, Apache Tears, Howlite, Malachite, Marble, Moonstone, Obsidian and Pargasite but to name a few.  Which we may wish to look into the properties of those.  I know some people prefer to use only natural grown, coloured or sourced stones within their practices.  I happened to of onced purchased a piece of blue Lapis Lazuli which got wet by accident while in a white silk pouch and the silk pouch turned blue and grey where the dye ran!!  - Even thought Lapis lazuli is found in limestone in the Kokcha River valley of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan.

Water Damaged Stones:

Some stones can also be dissolved, rust or damaged by water!  Here's an example of some of those stones:
  • Calcite (will dissolve)
  • Carnelian (salt water can cause fractures)
  • Galena (will rust)
  • Halite (will dissolve)
  • Hematite  (can rust)
  • Labradorite (will dissolve)
  • Lepidolite (will flake apart)
  • Lodestone (will rust)
  • Malachite (can break in hot water)
  • Mica (will flake apart)
  • Moldavite (can break in hot water)
  • Muscovite (will flake apart)
  • Opals (can crack/ break)
  • Pearls (will lose luster and can break)
  • Pyrite (combined with water produces sulfuric acid)
  • Selenite (will dissolve)
  • Turquoise (will fade)
  • Obsidian (all forms can break from extreme liquid temperatures)
  • Ulexite ( will dissolve)

Sun Damage:

Some stones will fade as a result of being exposed to the sun.  Some of these are more directly while some will fade just from being in a sunny room.  It's usually advised you keep stones in cloths or bags to prevent from such damage.  Here's an example of some of those stones: Aventurine, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Beryl, Citrine, Kunzite, Sapphires, Fluorite, Rose Quartz, Smokey Quartz

Fragile stones:

Although Amber & Opal may not fade in the Sun, they can become brittle from the sun causing them to crack.

While stones like Selenite are quite fragile and can chip or smash just from knocking them.

Some other apparently brittle stones and minerals include but are not limited to: Cerussite, Chrysoberyl, Dolomite, Fluorite, Grossular Garnet, Hessonite, Lazulite, Malachite, Rhodonite, Rutile, Scheelite, Sodalite, Smithsonite, Turquoise, Unarovite, Vesuvianite, Watermelon Tourmaline

Toxic stones:

Some stones even give off bad health properties if prolonged contact such as worn in jewellery or put into drinking water as many crystals and stones are actually water soluble but will expel toxic minerals into the water that you definitely do NOT want to drink.   So here are a few crystals that are able to go in water but you should definitely NOT use to make elixirs or prolonged worn jewellery:
  • Amazonite - Contains copper
  • Black Tourmaline - Contains aluminum
  • Emerald - Contains aluminum
  • Fluorite - Contains fluorine, can cause extremely painful skeletal disease
  • Pyrite - Contains heavy metals
  • Coral - Organic material, may contain pathogens
  • Garnet - Contains aluminum
  • Jade - Contains aluminum
  • Malachite - Extremely high copper content
  • Moonstone - Contains aluminum and potentially other toxic materials
  • Rose Quartz - Contains aluminum
  • Ruby - Contains aluminum
  • Saphire - Contains aluminum
  • Serpentine - Contains asbestos
  • Tiger’s Eye - Contains asbestos
  • All Quartz - Some forms are water safe but be careful with storage as all kinds of quartz dust causes silicosis

So perhaps keep that in mind especially since some of these are quite pricey and we definitely don’t want to be damaging them.  I honestly recommend cleansing and charging your crystals by laying them out on your window ledge (inside) under a full (or new) moon.  Equally keep what I said here in mind when doing any experiments, putting them in tinctures, oils or perfumes, burying them etc etc.

Herbs (Plants, Flowers, Bark, Roots etc)

Herbs and plants have been used since the very beginning but not everything is safe!  While some herbs (plants, flowers, bark, roots etc) come with a load of health benefits some really don’t and not just to us humans but to our pets and other animals and even our plants!!  I beg of you to do your research before bringing anything home.  Even in plant form or kitchen herbs and spices!

That’s just to throw a few websites at you.  Also note that some that are poisonous to ingest are fine once cooked.  And that some you can’t even touch so definitely don’t want to burn, eat, sleep with under your pillow etc.  SOME herbs that are poisonous to ingest:  Aconite, Belladonna (aka Deadly Nightshade), Lilly of the Valley, Mandrake Root, Mistletoe, Monkshood, Morning Glory, Mugwort, Skullcap, St Johns Wort and Wormwood are just some of the more poisonous ingredients you can obtain.

And some while carrying very good health benefits and that can be used safely in tea, tinctures, cooking, eating raw, medicine, massage, ingested etc etc also carry unwanted properties.  Such as Aloe Vera which is an all round good plant.  The gel inside is used in a great many healing tonics, creams, aftersun, etc..  It can be used raw on the skin too and is fantastic for burns.  It also has many antioxidant and antibacterial properties.  It can also be used in more obscure ways such as reducing dental plaque if you brush your teeth with it.  It can help with canker sores, reduce constipation and has even been rumored to help prevent wrinkles and improve low blood surages – thank you google.  But for all those good points it doesn’t tell you that it’s a blood thinner and may be fatal if swallowed in large doses or use incorrectly.
Aloe gel (not the yellow latex inside or the external leaf) is deemed as safe when applied to the skin appropriately as a medicine or as a cosmetic.
Aloe gel is probably safe when taken orally in low dose. However taking aloe latex or outer leaf by mouth is considered as unsafe but you can consume.
Remember, products made from whole aloe leaves will contain some aloe latex.
Aloe latex can cause some side effects such as stomach pain and cramps. Long-term use of large amounts of aloe latex might cause diarrhea, kidney problems, blood in the urine, low potassium, muscle weakness, weight loss, and heart disturbances. Taking aloe latex 1 gram daily for several days can be fatal.
Pregnant women, Elderly and Children shouldn't ingest any part of Aloe to be safe and to seek specifcally designed Aloe products and not use raw Aloe plant.
Diabetes: Some research suggests that aloe might lower blood sugar. If you take aloe by mouth and you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely.
Intestinal conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or obstruction: Do not take aloe latex if you have any of these conditions. Aloe latex is a bowel irritant.
Hemorrhoids: Do not take aloe latex if you have hemorrhoids. It could make the condition worse.
Kidney problems: High doses of aloe latex have been linked to kidney failure and other serious conditions.
Surgery: Aloe might affect blood sugar levels and could interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery. Stop taking aloe at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
- I wripped most of this information off of Stylecraze website which I do reccoment you go read the full information at https://www.stylecraze.com/articles/side-effects-of-aloe-vera-juice/#gref

Keep in mind that while some herbs, plants, flowers, fruits, bark, roots, nuts etc etc can be eaten they are very different when it comes to burning in incense or visa versa.  Making your own oils, tinctures, incense, home fragrance and cleaning products, medicine, pest control, teas etc etc should always be done with full research as to the positive benefits as well as the negative side effects to you, others in your home inc animals and plants depending on how you wish to use said ingredient.

So here's a very incomplete list of some of those as mentioned.. but please do your research on ALL.  There's many amazing books out there or the internet.  He are some examples of herbs that are considered all round "good" but that have some bad properties.
  • Allspice -  Insufficient evidence suggests that Allspice may cause Intestinal gas, Indigestion, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Fever, Flu, Colds, Heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Aloe vera - Blood thinning, kidney problems.
  • Cinnamon - Can cause skin burns if applied topically. Eating / drinking too much cinnamon may cause liver damage.  May Increase the Risk of Cancer. May Cause Mouth Sores. May Cause Low Blood Sugar. May Cause Breathing Problems. May Interact With Certain Medications.
  • Chamomile - Can thin the blood, do not take with blood thinners, aspirin, antidepressants, and some Alzheimer’s medications. It can also cause allergic reactions in people with ragweed or daisy allergies.
  • Echinacea - Do not take with immunosuppressants, after organ transplant, or if you have an autoimmune disease.
  • Feverfew - Blood thinning.
  • Garlic - Blood thinning.
  • Ginger - Blood thinner and should not be taken by anyone on blood thinning medications or with bleeding disorders, Too much can stimulate stomach upset leading to indigestion and gassiness, Pregnant women shouldn't use huge amounts of ginger for a long period of time because it can irritate the abdominal area.
  • Ginseng - Blood thinning.
  • Gingko - Blood thinning.
  • Goldenseal - Do not take with immunosuppressants, after organ transplant, or if you have an autoimmune disease.
  • Licorice - Can cause high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, and heart failure.
  • Nutmeg - High dosage can cause hallucinations and can be toxic, Pregnant women should not use nutmeg medicinally.  Not to be taken with antidepressants.
  • Dong Quai - Blood thinning.
  • Tumeric - Blood thinning, upset your stomach, may stimulate contractions.
  • Willow Bark - Blood thinning.
  • St. Johns Wort - Do not take with contraception, immunosuppressants, or antibiotics. Also, avoid if taking any medication that causes sun sensitivity or if you’re naturally prone to sunburns!
  • Mugwort - Do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding, may cause miscarriage. May cause allergic reactions in people who are allergic to ragweed and daisies.
Also for my own interest I have just put together a little blog on Pumpkin Spice mix and the Magickal properties, Health Benefits and Possible Side Effects of the ingredients involved in that which you can view here:

Essential Oils

First warning comes with common sense that Essential Oils are high concentrated extracts of herbs, flowers and other plants, roots, bark, fruits and nuts etc.  It should never be ingested in any way in raw essential oil form as it should always be diluted / watered down with a carrier oil (vegetable glycerin, almond oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil etc), water (such as with use in oil burners) or something else.  Once diluted even then do not take orally or inject.  – True massage oils are made of diluted essential oils and a carrier oil.  Please be mindful what you’re absorbing through your skin or inhaling when you breath.  As as mentioned in the herb section not all of these are safe for people, animals or even plants.

Under no circumstances should you ever use anything on animals orally or externally as it can be highly fatal or cause other very bad side effects etc see the herbs section.

Another point is that all oils are fire hazards and are flammable; while I’m not saying they’re going to spontaneously combust please be very mindful when creating and using anointing oils, using oils in oil burners and/or any other way in which any oil may come in contact with any flame.

Like all things do your research before purchasing and make sure you get several opinions not just one persons half-witted assumptions.

Activity..

Research other potentially dangerous, hazardous and otherwise bad side effects of your more commonly use stones, herbs and essential oils.

    BoS Prompts Part 1 Conclusion.

There's now a dedicated facebook page to support these blog posts @ https://www.facebook.com/BookOfShadowsPrompts/

Thank you all for the support.  I've now made a dedicated facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BookOfShadowsPrompts/ so if you go there turn on all notifications you won't miss these blog posts!!

BoS Prompts Part 1 Conclusion.. Sunday 5th May 2018 The Conclusion to this series thus far.

This week isn’t much of a Book of Shadow Prompt as it is more of a conclusion summary to the previous posts and also a follow up of a few things plus a mini recap.  So..

First of all I’m closing the Facebook Group.  These posts get between 200 to 1000+ views each and the group has 103 inactive members (excluding myself) so I figured that closing down the group and creating a Facebook Page @ https://www.facebook.com/BookOfShadowsPrompts would be better.  I have amended each post so they link to the Page and not the Group.

I’m sadly ending doing these Book of Shadows blog Prompts here with a view to continue doing these posts come late Autumn (Fall) / Winter time..  But anything can happen between now and then so I make no promises.  However I will resume back to doing one off posts here and there which I think would suit this BoS category and so I’ll be posting them on my Patreon *for free* and also on my Twitter and in various Facebook groups..  & Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/BookOfShadowsPrompts/.  It’s been a crazy journey this past 25 weeks or so and so much has changed for me in that time.  I really hope these blogs have been of use to someone; and no I won’t be deleting them and so they’ll remain here for as long as they remain...!

What have I learnt?  I decided to do a 5 part series on getting started with a Book of Shadows.  I did 5 posts on setting up a Book of Shadows / Grimoire and then fellow members of a group I frequented asked me to do these blog posts every Sunday, we would work on them and share within the group what we had done on Fridays.  By week 8 I was very frustrated that not one person had bothered to do these prompts..  And by week 18 I had been banned from that group for being depressed and suicidal and unfriended by some of the people I thought were like family to me – so live and learn.  I did start doing these prompts for them but soon found that I was doing them for myself and I have learnt more, recapped, reviewed and grown so much as a spiritual / magickal person.  Outside of these I have also grown from my depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia and other medical problems and have a much more positive view forward with my life, at least the near future.  I am sad to be ending these posts here but I feel that I have achieved what I wanted to do in bringing you food for thought and a jumping off point as to what to include in your Books of Shadows as well as hopefully some encouragement to learn and grow yourselves.  I have a lot of people come to me and say 'I'm new, will you teach me..' and in truth the only way (I personally feel) you learn is to read everything, practice everything, take onboard everyones opinions (not just one persons) and work out for yourself what YOU feel works for you regardless of if you're a Wiccan Pagan, Druid Pagan, Other kind of Pagan, Witch, Spiritual, Unsure, Inquisitive, Mundane or somewhere inbetween or beyond.  We all have to start somewhere so I thought I'd write a blog each week with some IN MY OPINION & MY BELIEFS (as an Eclectic Wiccan / Pagan and a Witch of 16-19 years (at this time).  Please feel free to disagree with me - but you don't to be rude about it.  Feel free to get others opinions or make your own mind up.

You can follow me on Instagram here. (I’m currently doing a Giveaway!)

You can also check out my YouTube as I post unboxings and my thoughts and opinions on DeAgostini’s Enhancing Your Mind Body Spirit magazines so check that out here.

I truly hope we have covered What is a Book of Shadows / Grimoire?   - From my understanding (in my opinion) that these books are used as journals and/or references and/or..  Well let me explain - A Book of Shadows (BoS) / Grimoire is used to contain a Pagan/Witch/Spiritual Persons spells, ritual, recipes, notes, thoughts, instructions, other workings, instructions, education etc..  It is typically handwritten, but not always, and it's usually a very private book.  Sometimes this book may be a collective book like one shared in a coven (but here we're looking at personal BoS/G).  Sometimes this book is passed down throughout a family or left to descendants upon death and other times it's to be burnt with the writer.  Some writers even publish theirs or versions of.  - Similar books may be a Book of Light, Book of Mirrors, Book of Rainbows, Book of Angels and the list goes on.

Is there anything I didn’t blog about of which you would have liked me to of blogged about?  Feel free to IM me on that Fb page, to my Instagram, in the comments below..  I’m sure my knowledge is much more extensive than what I’ve shared here.  Plus I love to learn and grow too..

So until Merry Meet again for now Bright Blessings, much Love and Light and Merry Part xX Imogen x

BoS Prompt 20: Breaking the fear of practicing & writing your own workings.

    Prompt 20. Sunday 14th April 2018 - The 20th prompt will be..
Breaking the fear of practicing & writing your own workings.

Following up from last weeks blog post about ‘starting to learn Herbs and stones’ I decided to make this weeks post about writing your own spells and next weeks post about breaking the fear of practicing.  The more I thought about this the more I felt it was really one in the same blog as the two go hand in hand along with obviously practicing other people’s workings.

PLEASE NOTE EVEN IF YOU’RE THE WISEST OF CRONES AND EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED YOU MIGHT STILL LEARN OR AT LEAST ENJOY SOMETHINGS WITHIN THIS BLOG.

For the sake of this blog post when I say “working” or “workings” I am referring to any spell, ritual, prayer, meditation, enchantment, psychic ability, magickal act etc etc any act of magick or craft etc..

How I got started and broke my fear.. So let us start with breaking the fear of practicing or indeed where to start!  For me when people ask how long I’ve been a Witch/Pagan usually I answer with something like 14-16 years (I’m 29 now).  The reason for this is that I’ve actually been practicing some form of Witchcraft / Pagan Practice / Spiritual Life all of my life but it wasn’t until I was 13 that I discovered the things I did actually have a name, I belong to a group of people and that witchcraft is actually a real thing..!  But I only found my confidence and came out of myself (not out of the broom closet until I was 25) and I was able to practice..
So I started studying, learning about witch history..  Learning about what real life witches do, the occult, how it’s not Satanism, how you can even still be a Christian in this day and age.  This was a happy accident I discovered while researching about paranormal so of course those studies continued too and then developed and went on Paganism or more specifically Wicca.
For the first 2-3 years from 13 - 15/16 I became scared to practice, now armed with my new knowledge I worried too much that something bad would happen, something would go wrong, I was doing these acts for more selfish reason and such forth.  I had purchased a few tools and items.. (I was very lucky at that time as I lived in a town that had more Antique Shops, Thrift Stores, Junk Yards and Flea Markets than regular shops!!)  My Grandmother bought me my first Tarot deck and while I’d never been allowed to light candles I certainly had a large collection along with other trinkets, knickknacks and things.  Eventually circumstances saw that just before my 16th Birthday I ended up leaving my Dads house and that town and moving to live with my Grandparents.  I was back with my old friends at my old hang outs and indeed met new friends too.  One particular new friend was very much into the practice himself, or some much darker and twisted version of it, and he took it upon himself to get me out of my comfort zone and start practicing..  (While our friendship wasn’t long lasting for other reasons, mostly that I became busy with college, voluntary job and an actual job..  Plus my best friend broke up with him and it was just awkward - it’s definitely part of my foundation getting over my fear to be able to be so open about it all now!)
Some believe that you need to be initiated by another into the craft whereas others say if you follow X you can initiate yourself; which is more or less what I did..  During my 2nd-4th year I did some initiation online courses and then much later on in I believe 2014/15 initiated myself following my officially coming out the broom closet  announcement by following and practicing Timothy Roderick's book - 'Wicca: A Year and a Day: 366 Days of Spiritual Practice in the Craft of the Wise' ..which I'll mention more about further down this blog post..  But YouTuber DragonFeather369 has some amazing videos on that book.
Yes when I practice (even now) sometimes I feel really stupid, self-conscious, nervous, shy, weirded out, worried people can hear/see me etc..  But that's the same with almost anything I know I'm like that when making YouTube videos regardless of if the content is planners, magickal, arts and crafts or something else entirely. Same with gaming around guys I like or people I want to impress (I like to think I'm good but worry they'll judge me if I mess up!) But don't worry..  It's ok a lot of people talk to themselves and even more talk to their pets and some even talk to their plants.  You can always pretend you were on the phone and/or work in a more secretive place ie late at night or when you're home alone.  Work in whispers or not aloud!  Next week I will talk about Magickal Housekeeping and Everyday Practical Magick which is more aimed for those who want to practice but are still in the broom closet because of family, friends, religion, society or some other reason.  But for those of us out and proud and shouting from the mountain tops it's still good practices to keep. Keep going and you'll get there..  I promise.

My recommendations will always be study / research first then practice; practice may never be perfect but you’ll definitely learn and grow.  So I figured within this series by now we have learnt a lot about ourselves, about how to cleanse, consecrate and charge and indeed why that is something we would do with newly bought items first or second hand.  We have learnt about The Pentacle / Pentagram meaning & The 4 Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water (plus the firth Spirit).  About The Tree of Life, Grounding, Meditation And Prayer.  We learnt about The Sabbats & Wheel of The Year.  Plus some stuff about The Moon including planting by the moon, moon gardens and Esbats.  We learnt a little bit about Enlightenment & Deity (Gods and Goddesses).  We learnt about Zodiac signs (birth signs) and their properties.  We learnt a little bit about using Herbs, Oils and Stones plus tinctures and more.. Using Colours in our workings and coloured candles (with a mention about an old blog post on Candles I wrote last year which can be found: HERE).  We looked at Intuitive, Empath & Clair's Psychic abilities.  We looked a little more closely at some types of Runes, Symbols, Sigils & Cyphers and the use of Alphabet within them.  We studied about Spirit guides, Spirit animals & Totem animals & Familiars and also their differences.  We started looking a little more at hands on practice with Protection, Repel and Banish Workings.  Furthermore we looked at Amulets, Talismans & Charms.  We looked at gratitude and respect with Deity Offerings & Fae Offerings which really could be lent to any aspect of Nature Offerings & Elemental Offerings etc.  We took things back to basics with a little knowledge on types of Witches / About Witches blog post and followed that up with exploring types of Divination.  We continued our in-depth learning last week with starting to learn Stones & Herbs etc.. blog and so really we’ve been on one crazy ride this last 22 weeks or so, not forgetting my prior 5 part mini-series that inspired it all on how to literally create a Book of Shadows. Part 1. Finding your Book of Shadows / Grimoire etc.  Part 2. Breaking in your Book of Shadows / Grimoire etc.  Part 3. What to write in your Book of Shadows/ Grimoire etc.  Part 4. What to add(visually) to your Book of Shadows / Grimoire etc.  Part 5. When should we be adding to our Book of Shadows / Grimoire etc..

So after all of that we are definitely ready to start practicing and writing our own workings.  Starting is always scary breaking that fear of ‘what if’ and the glass is half empty.  Take the leap of faith and always do what feels right to you.  Never fear asking for help.  Another thing I’ve learnt is that this is a never ending pool of knowledge.  There’s so many religions and faiths and spiritualities – Which is why now I feel me saying I’m Eclectic Wiccan is more just Eclectic or Eclectic Pagan perhaps since while I do keep the Wiccan Religious side mostly but lean towards my own kind of craft with elements from all walks of life.  Plus I absolutely love to read / hear different people’s opinions and takes on the same subjects. – geek!

..But you’re not here to listen to me babble on about myself..  So lets us break into the next phase for anyone who isn’t there and for anyone who is, you may even learn something or just refresh some of them baby steps.

So shake off the fear..  First of all fearing something, doubting something, disbelief in something..  Nothing’s going to work for you!!  If you enter into a magickal working thinking this is a load of old codswallop, it’s clearly fake and this is a load of cow dung.  Guess what..  It’s not going to work!!  You’re right!!  Congratulations!!   But it’s as Roald Dahl said “Those who don’t believe in Magic will never find it!”  You have to at least believe in the idea or want to believe!  As Jack Skeleton said “Just because I cannot see it doesn’t mean I can’t believe it!”  and so enjoy this amazing unique and wonderful journey and remember as Tolkien said "Not all who wander are lost!" So go in with an open heart and an open mind and see what comes to you..

Ok let's say you believe..  But how does this work?  Right..  I’m going to be honest with you and tell you how I feel it works (other people will have various opinions).  For me I feel that you have a hope, a wish, a dream, a desire..  Something you’re longing for (not destined as that’s a whole other thing) but something you want.  For you..  For others..  Be mindful of being careful what you wish for, the Wiccan Rede Rule of “Harm none, do as ye will” (do what you like as long as you don’t hurt anyone, that includes yourself).  Or other rules like three fold law, karma and such forth.  Just do good things with good intentions and then read about the rest later.  So for me I feel that setting your intention for what you want and spending time creating that working, setting up that working, doing the working itself opens our hearts and opens our minds, even our subconscious mind, to look for those opportunities to find good even in the very bad, to use ourselves to aid, heal and help others.  I don’t believe we can just light a candle, wish for a million and wake up the next morning with a big bag of cash posted through our door.  What I do believe is we can light a candle, wish for a million and over the next few weeks be presented with opportunities in career / job, living / accommodation, relationships and much more a wealth of opportunities that could lead to that abundance of money if you work hard and take every opportunity created by you making that decision.  The act of lighting the candle is simply symbolic that you did this thing to mark your intentions for what it is you want in order for you to actively look for the results and other things to happen but ultimately it’s your decision and your choices to take the bull by the horns and go for it.  That’s not to say that you won’t wake up with a million shoved through your letterbox..  I suppose in some weird twist of fate it could happen.  But another point to consider here is also greed in that!  Wish for money, wish for abundance, wish for a better financial situation but do you really need a million?  Will a few thousand not buy you your house, get you out of debt and put you and your family in a comfortably living situation?  People say to me if magick is real and I believe in it and I practice it then why am I still disabled unable to work coping with multiple illnesses/disabilities?  To which I don’t have an answer but I can tell you that through magick I’m still alive, it’s given me faith and something to believe in, work with/for, have, teach, do..  And my practice is rewarded when I'm offered medical opportunities and medication to improve my situation the best we can right now.  It’s taught me things and that alone to me is magick.  It’s given me the strength to keep fighting and keep trying.

So we believe..  We have some tools and ingredients (or not).  Where do we start to practice?

For me I won’t say jump into casting a circle, summon some ancient being and have a tea party while cursing your enemies.  Seems a bit of a leap..  and not something you should ever do!!  But each to their own.  Perhaps start with simple things.  Next week, as said, I plan to do a blog on everyday magick looking at some of the more basic and mundane things that everyone can do.  I mentioned this in my last few blogs that practicing doesn’t need all these tools and items, an altar.. etc.  My practice may look elaborate with all this stuff as seen on my instagram @ instagram.com/missimoinsane but believe me deep down I know I just need the very basics and myself.  So start with simple things like stirring your morning tea/coffee clockwise while wishing for positive influences all day or anticlockwise while wishing your tiredness away so you can focus on the day ahead.  While bathing at night hold your hands over the water and ask that this water washes away all the negativity you’ve accumulated throughout the day, even add salt to purify if you wish (Epsom salt is especially good and has additional relaxation and health benefits!) – this could be a sink of water, bowl of water or bath etc..  Prayer is such a simple and easy one pray for the health and safety of others, light a candle in respect of that.  Practice some of those protection workings.  Grab yourself a book (Elemental Encyclopedia of 2000 Spells is a good place to start.. huge heavy hardback, hard to hide!  But they do have a 500 paperback version that’s smaller) there’s a few spells there..  Or you could get a book that’s more of an initiation into a craft/practice such as Wicca.  One book particular is the big orange Wicca A Year And A Day 366 book by Timothy Roderick.  (BE WARNED the book requires you to purchase items for the practice which comes with quite a hefty priced shopping list!!  Yes you can substitute some of those candles for smaller ones or white if you can’t find the colour you need but still pricey!!  I took it upon myself to write a blog with the shopping list contents: HERE!!)  Which is a great book for beginners (even if you want to be a witch and not wiccan it’s still a good book for you!) there’s a new page or two for each day giving you tasks and teaching various workings including giving you more details on various things such as grounding and meditation.

    So you’re practicing?  Good!

How do you write your own workings?  It’s actually a lot easier than people think and can be done in multiple ways.

    Words:
First note that if you’re adding words, like a speech you don’t have to make it rhyme it doesn’t have to be a poem.  But if that’s what you like then there are many books and even phone apps and online websites that can help you with rhyming words and/or poetry.  Words don’t have to be complicated they just have to be accurate and heart felt; say what you mean and what you want.  Does it need to be spoken aloud?  No!  Sometimes people feel very self-conscious as is without talking to themselves too.  So saying the words aloud in your head to yourself is still putting those words out there just not literally aloud.  Equally you can whisper, I know a girl who finds whispering magickal and says her words are carried in a whisper by the winds.  Others feel the need to stand on top of hills, cliffs, mountains and scream and shout their words to the world.

    Tools:
Tools are not needed; but they’re sure fun to have!!  Your index finger of your more dominant hand can be the best wand.   Or for me I use my whole hand, I have a wand I just prefer to use my hand.  Tools can be sourced from things you have around the house.. cups, knives, sticks, bowls etc..  But can also be sourced and/or made from various places and various materials.

    Ingredients:
Use what you have, what you can find, what you can swap, etc..  Don't spend silly money if a working requires X which will cost you silly money to import a tiny bit that might not even make it through customs..  Don't risk it.  There's many alternatives for every ingredient you would need.  I will go on to explain changing ingredients..

    Grounding, Casting Circles, Meditation etc:
Do you need to?  Well it depends who you ask but if you're asking me then no, at least not for everything!  Do what feels right to you!  Some people take a long blessed bath complete with some salts and essential oils to purify themselves.  They then smudge their spaces.  They call the quarters (elements, deity, spirits, guides etc etc) and cast a circle of protection making sure they have everything they will need so as not to break the circle and step outside of it.  Their practices are long drawn out events sometimes repeated daily, weekly, monthly, yearly etc..  Their practices are deep and well constructed ritualistic / sacred events.  Whereas other people just light a candle and say a few words.  Do what you feel is right, although when inviting spirits and such forth even benevolent ones I'd always cast a circle and exercise some cautions before and after.  Seek information on smudging, ringing of bells or chimes and similar.  Also some people prefer to not eat before a practice to increase their vibrations and eat after as part of a grounding and restoring your energy.  You'll figure out what works best for you.

Using a pre-existing spell or other workings:
Always do your research so lets start with you bought a book that has a spell in it, found one on the internet or your friend/family/coven passed one down to you.  First believe in it or it will never work; remember open heart and open mind.  Second just because it worked for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you.  Like how not all people gel well with all forms of divination, not all people have the same psychic abilities and/or intuitions and not all people are going to get on with all forms of workings and types of work.  One person who works primarily casts their spells with herbs could be terrible with candles magick, water etc etc.. and visa versa.

But you have this recipe, let's say it’s a spell.  So option 1 use the spell as is and see what happens (making notes is always great to have a journal or a computer or notebook or phone or something where you can keep notes – what you did, what you changed, moon phase, day of the week, ingredients, how you did it, did it work, your thoughts and feelings).  Option 2 you see what the spell contains and see how you can change it to make it your own.  Does it call for a blue candle but you feel a green candle would work better, does it call for sage but you can’t get any where you live and can substitute it for frankincense resin or palo santo wood.  Option 3 completely rewrite the spell using your words, your ingredients, things you made, include other things, turn it from a big complex spell to a much simpler or visa versa.  Be creative.  It’s not difficult and as said in my last blog a basic knowledge of say 10 herbs and 10 stones will give you a little insight.  Revisit the blog I wrote about colours how can you use colours be it candles, stones, feathers, yarn, clay, beads or other objects.

    Creating your own recipes:
How to write your own working from scratch?  This becomes a little harder than say altering one but works very much on the same principles.  First you have to decide what it is you wish to achieve.  (Having a working notebook is fantastic for this.)  Second write down some of the items you might like to include.  Third research those items and see if their properties work together with your intentions or clash, see if they work well with others – especially if you’re making say incense or an oil you want scents that work together.  If you’re making something a little more dangerous like tinctures maybe consult some professional information.  Remember what I said in my other blog post how some herbs, resins, bark, spices, flowers etc etc can be poisonous to humans, cats and/or other animals when inhaled or ingested or even when come in contact with the skin.  Fourth get to making.. do your working / practice and see what happens.  Making notes helps you to change things up for next time or know how to repeat.  Repeat and have enough repetitive successes?  Why not add those to your Book of Shadows as your personal recipes?  Have fun and explore!

Note.  Recipies are the ingredients used and how much but also when some days, dates, astrological events, moon phases etc have great effects on your workings.  Recipes may also refer to things being measured in "parts" please refer to my blog about herbs, stones, oils etc for information on what "parts" mean in recipes ie "one part X to two parts Z".  Recipes this can include anything from stones used, herbs, incense, objects, colour of candles, candle shapes etc..

Next week I’ll be looking more closely at Magickal Housekeeping and Everyday Practical Magick.

Finally I just wish to say that you're never too old or too young to learn / practice.  You're never too old or too young to have a mentor, teacher, join a coven etc.  Asking for help, assistance, advice is recommended even if you're the most introverted or solitary witches.  These days there's 100s if not 1000s of Facebook groups and Forum based apps like Amieno.  As well as the Instagram community and the YouTube community.
